Gruber Brass Lion Alarm Clock

Item appears to be brass in color and is labeled West Germany on the back. On the inside of the lions head it is labeled Gruber 69. The clock itself is labeled Gruber and Alarm on its face.

The lions face has two green jewel eyes. I came across this clock in a yard sale and had to have it. I would love to know how to operate it and the history of same to include its year and a current value so I'll know to lock it up or not. Thank you for any assistance.
