Viking Grandfather Clock pendulum keeps stopping

by Brian
(St. Louis, MO)

My grandfather clock had been running fine until a couple of days ago. I forgot to pull the weight up and the clock stopped when the weight reached the ground. I pulled the weight up all the way tight to the top (I was not paying close attention). Now the clock runs for 5 minutes and the pendulum stops. I am assuming that the mechanism for the weight is jammed. If I take the weight off and move the chain so there is slack, reinstall the weight and then pull the chain a little bit, will this fix the problem?

I don't see anything wrong with the pendulum or the mechanism.

Check the pivots!
by: Anonymous

My guess is when the weight hit the ground, it shocked the movement...
after all, those weights weigh about 10 Lbs. each. Open the side compartment and check all the pivots. One may have snapped out of position or broken. If this is the case, take needlenose pliars, and snap them back into position. Or call a clock shop.

follow up

I did remove the written Andrew re-threaded the chain. It made no difference. The clock runs for 5 minutes and then stops. I have no idea what happened to it to make it stop working properly.
