Vienna Regulator - Chiming Incorrect

by Ray Copping

Hi

Due to several contributions on this web-site and your recommendations I have now ultrasonically cleaned the works of my clock - and it was successful - many thanks. However, I had to remove the face and hands to clean the works and obviously refit the face and hands. The clock is now ticking away perfectly okay - but the chiming is now incorrect - whatever the clock hour hand points to - it chimes only four times when the minute hand reachs the 12 position - on the hour. Is this to do with the position of the hour hand on the spindle? Any help would be very welcome in now setting the clock to chime correctly.

Chimes not correct
by: Bill

You will probably have to remove the hands and dial again and check the rack and snail (the snail is the snail-shaped part that is mounted to the center shaft and the rack is the saw-blade looking part that is usually just above and to the right of the snail).

It sounds like either the rack is not dropping all the way down when it's time to strike, or something is keeping the little lever that falls onto the snail from dropping all the way down until it rests on the snail.

While turning the minute hand shaft, watch for anything that keeps these parts from moving freely. Sometimes they are gummed up on their shafts, and sometimes they get bent slightly during cleaning and catch on another part of the movement. If this is the case, you will have to gently bend it back until it moves freely.

Hope this helps, Bill
