All 3 mainsprings very difficult to wind

Westminster mantle clock. All 3 mainsprings are extremely difficult to wind even after the clock has run for several days then needs rewinding. They feel like they are already wound up. Is this normal? Any way to loosen them up? Thank you. Brad
