Now and Zen clock - minute hand twitching

by M.
(USA)

I have a "Now and Zen" alarm clock whose minute hand does not progress, but twitches (as do two visible gears) when batteries are installed. When moved manually, all hands and gears appear to function as one would expect.

I'd like to rescue this clock if possible, and replacing the movement does not seem like a viable option given the nature of the clock itself (there are extra electronics and mechanisms attached to make the chime ring at specific intervals). I'm fairly handy, but I'm not a whiz with electronics and soldering.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks, M.
