Hermle Westminister quarter hour chimes all time

by Johnny Davis
(Goldsboro, NC )

I have a Hermle regulator with 32 drop... the quarter hour will not stop chiming. Is there an adjustment I can make. I read the Balcomb book and don't quite get it. And concerned if I make some adjustment I might really mess it up. suggestions?

The probable cause is the lift bar that is lifted every quarter hour by the cog on the hour pipe is not dropping freely so that it catches the stop pin on the gear. It could also be that the stop pin on the gear is broken off.

Look inside the movement and find where the lever drops down to catch the stop pin. Look for a missing pin on the gear right next to the fly. If the pin is intact, check to see why the lever is not falling freely enough to catch this pin. Could be the shaft it rides on has been oiled in the past and is now gummed up, or could be a missing or unhooked spring on some movements.
