Gilbert Mantel Clock, How does the chime work?

by Dana
(Milan, Il)

Looking at the

Looking at the "l" shaped part on the main shaft.

I recently voluntered to clean a friends Gilbert Mantle clock. Well, I took photos, took it apart, eventually got it together, but now have a question on putting the last little part on it. I would like to know the relationship between the "l" shaped part in the middle of the photo and the rest of the chime parts.

Seems to me that it will raise the striker and drop it every hour. Does not make sense at this point. How should it be set and what does it do? What is its name. Thanks.

Half-hour Strike
by: Bill

Hi Dana,

The part you are talking about is there for the single strike on the half-hour. It is held in place by friction and should be able to be turned on its shaft to drop the hammer at :30 after the hour.
