Eight Day Spring wound Pendulum Clock

by Tal Nowell
(Danville, VA, USA)

It appears the spring is too weak to keep the pendulum moving. When you start the pendulum if swings for about 20 seconds and then stops.

Is there anything I can do to make the clock run again?
It belonged to my mother-in-law and means a lot to my wife.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Pendulum Won't Stay Swinging
by: Bill

Hi Tal,

The problem of a pendulum that won't keep swinging could be caused by many different defects.

The most common reason being that it needs cleaning and oiling. Other reasons could be the clock is out of beat, the escapement needs adjusting, the spring is set (weak), a bent tooth on one of the wheels (gears), a damaged pinion, bent pivot or worn pivot hole, (needs re-bushing), etc.

It probably should be looked at by a clock repair person.
