German Chime Clock
by: Bill

Hi Wayne,

Thank you for sharing this clocks with us. I always love to hear a clock with Westminster chimes ringing every quarter-hour.

I believe your clock was manufactured in Germany somewhere in the '30's or '40's. Going by your description of the trademark on the movement, it was probably made by the Kienzle Clock Company.

During the time it was made, Kienzle made many types of clocks to export to the U.S. Not all clocks had the company name printed on the dial - this was even true of the American clock companies.

This fact makes it harder to identify antique clocks today. But the trademark of a clock dial with wings on either side is one of Kienzle's.

The word Foreign on the dial was required on any clock from outside the U.S. that was sold new here so people would know they were buying a clock made in another country.

I'm not sure of the dates when that was required. If someone else knows, please comment here. This might help narrow down the date of manufacture. You can read more about German clocks here.

Thanks, Bill!

I'm glad to hear the clock is German, and appreciate your identification of the flying dial as a Kienzle trademark. AntiqueClocksPriceguide.com agrees with that.

They date two similar clocks in the 1920's. They don't have information on the Kienzle company, however, so I'll be watching your site for more information on that.

German Clock
by: billmarl@comcast.net

I too have a German clock with flying eagle on the pan.

But the eagle is sitting on a circle that is divided into three sections with the letters F. M. S. in the sections. Any idea what it is? no marks are on the works other than numbers 42/400.

If anyone can help, please comment here.

"Foriegn" clock
by: Joanie at Albert's Antique Clocks in Holly Hill, FL.

Everyone is commenting about the Foriegn clock being a Kienzle because the tardemark on the clock was a dial with wings. The Kienzle trademark is the dial with wings but if you read, the man mentions an eagle sitting on top with an FMS in the dial circle with the wings. That is the trademark for Friedrich Mauthe and sons, not Kienzle.
Mauthe, Friedrich Uhrenfabrik (clock factory) GmbH (clocks and watches) Schwenningen a.N. Germany 005/5 Friedrich Mauthe June 2, 1822 - February 2, 1884. Started as general supplier for clockmakers tools and equipment. Mauthe accepted clocks on a barter system. As the demand for clocks increased, Mauthe started his own manufacturing enterprise in 1860. His sons Christian and Jacob joined the family enterprise in 1876. 1886, the Mauthe factory started her own spring drawing facilities. 1899 a case factory was added, by 1900 @ 1,000 employees were on the payroll. 1915 Mauthe added their own sawmill and milling shop. 1923, the year of inflation made competition for Mauthe tough. 1930 @ 2,000 workers produced 45,000 clocks and watches a week. 1937, 60% German clocks exported to London (England) were MAUTHE. 1970 Mauthe struggled for survival, 1975 the company was in receivership. 1976 MAUTHE was forced to close.

Foreign Clock
by: Erin

I have a clock I want to sell that was passed along to me by my great uncle. I have to identify the clock to know what to sell it for. It is a small wood mantle clock. Looks similar to some art deco clocks I've seen. It has a firebird on each side of the clock, also looks like an art deco design, but my parents said it was a firebird design. It has a Westminster chime with silent or chime options. The face of the clock is a silver-goldish color with raised silver numbers. It says Foreign below the six and inside the clock says Foreign 12 cm etched in the gear box inside the hull of the clock. Any ideas of who made this clock, when it was made or it's worth??

Thanks so much, anything would help.
